The Best of Marcelo Vieira

Marcelo Vieira da Silva Júnior or Marcelo as we know him has won just about every major title going. Armed with tons of pace, skill and the ultimate defensive brain. It was always written in the stars that Marcelo was going to be a Real Madrid legend. He has been at the club for fourteen years, and when he arrived from Fluminense FC for the bargain price of €6.5 million he was believed to be the natural replacement for Madrid immortal Roberto Carlos – no pressure then.

As he developed and blossomed at Real Madrid, he became one of the best left-backs in Europe – if not the world. Blessed with pinpoint passing and being hard to shake off the ball he began to dominate on the left-wing for Madrid. This domination was key to Real’s Champions League success and helped them to three in a row in Europe!

His Real Madrid career includes over 500 appearances for the club and he has scored 36 goals. He has won four La Liga titles, the Copa del Rey twice, the Supercopa de España four times, the Champions League four times, UEFA Super Cup three times and the FIFA Club World Cup four times. There is no doubting Marcelo’s trophy haul at Madrid.

His commitment and service to Real Madrid cannot be denied, but in recent months there has been a lot of talk about Marcelo winding down at Real Madrid. There have even been rumours of him moving away from The Estadio Santiago Bernabeu – unthinkable right! Well, current Real boss, Zinedine Zidane appears to favour Ferland Mendy of Marcelo since his arrival in Madrid over the summer.

It was thought that the Brazilian had been unsettled by the former coach Santiago Solari. Both these events have led to a bit of uncertainty surrounding Marcelo. It has been mooted that a switch to Juventus is on the cards. This would see him linking up with former teammate Cristiano Ronaldo. But we will have to wait to see what unfolds. However, it looks as if Marcelo is ready to fight for his place in Madrid and is not ready to give up his place easily. He recently posted:

“In my head, I never had the idea to wear the jersey of Juventus. I have always felt connected to Real Madrid. The Italian clubs often approached me, but it was nothing concrete. The truth is that I love Real Madrid, it’s my home and the best club in the world.”

So, despite the turbulence in recent times at Real Madrid, it looks like Marcelo is prepared to ride the storm out. Although on the occasions that he was brought back to the squad by Zidane, Real’s performances did improve, and they looked more solid. One thing is for sure, Marcelo has assured his place as one of Real Madrid’s greats. So, as we await the arrival of a new season we all need to find our football fix from somewhere!
